One of the most beautiful locations I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing a wedding is Battle Harbour, Labrador.
This island was once a vibrant fishing community, but like many others, was resettled. A trust has taken it over and restored the island to perfection, and visitors are welcome to enjoy its beauty.
Getting to Battle Harbour is no joke. It was a fun and exciting day of travel involving flights, road trips, ferries, and finally, a little walk from the wharf to the tiny saltbox house where I would spend the weekend. The easiest way to get to Battle Harbour is through Blanc Sablon, then driving to Mary’s Harbour and taking the ferry to Battle Harbour – but you can also get there by flying into Goose Bay and driving to Mary’s Harbour from there. That’s what I did, and the road trip from Goose Bay to Mary’s Harbour across Labrador was an experience I’ll never forget.
This wedding was small and intimate with just a few friends and family. A private ceremony on the wharf was followed by a day of adventuring for the bride and groom. All of their details – the bride’s dress, earrings, sealskin ‘flowers’, and even jams and butters for guests to take home, were made by local Labrador artists and friends and family of the couple. I was in awe of the creativity and beauty not just of the place, but of everyone involved who worked to make this wedding a dream come true.
